I made every moving mistake in the book.
I’m Margaret, a certified coach, consultant, and empty nest mom who turned a moving disaster into an opportunity to help empty nesters like you find an amazing place to move that supports the life you want.
I know what it’s like to leave the empty nest with hopes and dreams of moving someplace new and exciting, only to watch those hopes and dreams go up in smoke after making a costly and hard-to-fix moving mistake.
Once I realized I’d screwed up my move, I was determined to figure out what I’d done wrong and why. Upon retracing the steps of my search, the reasons why my move had veered so totally off the rails became clear.
First, I went about it all wrong.
- I hadn’t stopped to think about exactly what I was looking for and why.
- I hadn’t been honest with myself about what I needed to be happy living in a place.
- I’d acted irrationally and impulsively.
It all came back to bite me in the ass. But my screw-up wasn’t entirely my fault.
The internet was also to blame. Instead of making my search easier, researching places to move online muddied the waters even more.
Revisiting all the websites crammed with conflicting opinions and facts, I understood why my search had gotten so bogged down and my move had been such a disaster.
The cards were stacked against success.
Then I wondered how anyone could successfully navigate their search and move.
I thought about all the other people who are living unhappily with the consequences of a moving mistake. And I thought about all the people who dream about moving but stay where they are because they don’t want to risk making a moving mistake.
And I knew there had to be a better way.
So, I created the Find Your Happy Place system by adapting the planning and research tools and strategies I developed over 25 years as a consultant working with nonprofit organizations to find and access more than $20 million in grants.
Find Your Happy Place provides you with personalized tools, resources, and support to help you navigate your search and find your best places to move, so you can stop spinning your wheels and start enjoying your life in an exciting new place.
An empty nest.
A series of fortunate and unfortunate events.
I knew I wanted to move once my daughter left home for college. After living in Austin, Texas for 22 years, I was ready for a big change. Austin no longer felt like home.
Over the years, the cost of living had gone through the roof, traffic had become unbearable, and the vibe had gone from laid back to impossibly hip.
Besides feeling estranged from Austin, I didn’t need all that house anymore and couldn’t justify the cost of keeping it. On top of that, I was sick and tired of working all the time just to make ends meet.
I wanted to have fun and go on exciting adventures. I longed for something new and different.
So, when my then-husband took a job working for a small, tumbleweed-strewn West Texas town in the middle of nowhere, I sold the house in Austin and moved there after my daughter’s high school graduation.
Not surprisingly, things didn’t work out and I moved to the nearest city two years later.
Lubbock, Texas wasn’t much better. Socially and culturally, it was a very bad fit. But I met my current husband, Ryan there and we hatched a plan to escape Texas with our four cats (Juno, Lola, Pretty and Radar) and one rabbit (Jahbunny).
We figured it would be easy to find a cool place to move that felt like home.
Were we ever wrong!
Out of the frying pan and into the fire.
The search for our happy place was an utter disaster.
Over two years, we burned through thousands of dollars, wasted countless hours, and made an impressive series of forehead-smacking blunders.
It’s safe to say we were not firing on all cylinders.
And so, for all the wrong reasons, we bought a house in a small Iowa farming town –again, in the middle of nowhere, in a place eerily similar to West Texas.
@#%&!!!! Or, as Scooby-Doo would say, “Ruh-Roh!”
Coming to terms with such a huge screw-up wasn’t easy. The reality of our moving mistake took time to sink in.
And that’s when I found the silver lining to my moving misfortune.
Like a phoenix rising from the ashes.
I made a costly moving mistake, but that doesn’t mean you should have to.
This was the inspiration for the Find Your Happy Place system, which I created by drawing on research and planning expertise I developed over 25 years as a successful grants consultant.
I wanted to provide adventurous empty nesters like you with a personalized road map to guide you from living in a place that no longer meets your needs to an exciting new place that supports the life you want.
